Pt. Rajeev Taranath Concerts
with Abhiman Kaushal (tabla)
Rajeev Taranath is one of the foremost exponents
of the Sarod. Today one of the top ranking performers of the Maihar gharana,
this master musician’s concerts have been distinguished by deep introspection
and a highly disciplined approach to the development of a raga. Pt. Taranath
is the recipient of several awards, among them the Sangeet Natak Academy
award in 1999-2000. He is presently a visiting artist at the California
Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. In performances throughout the world,
he has been acclaimed for his technical virtuosity, inspired imagination
and emotional range.

The Romeiko Ensemble is an innovative group comprised of specialists in
Byzantine chant and the court music of the Byzantine Palace, as well as
the court and Sufi music of the Ottoman Empire. The Romeiko features 15
exceptional vocalists (cantors) from the U.S. and Greece, and five of
the most prominent instrumentalists from Turkey. It is led by Dr. Yiorgos
Bilalis, who has performed worldwide as a psaltes with Byzantine choirs
and as a hafiz in Sufi ceremonies. The program will include Christmas
hymns and carols, and Mevlevi Sufi devotional songs.
