Swapan Chauhduri credits his family for the early training and encouragement that have brought him to the very pinnacle of this Classical Music. His parents initiated his studies in Tabla when he was five, and inspired him in the field of music. The result of his dedication and devotion to the Art shine in every performance. The poetic style, sonority, clarity and elegance of his music, both as a soloist and accompanist, have earned him respect and appreciation from other artists and audiences around the world.

This style of playing is based on long training he received from his Guru, Pandit Santosh Krishna Biswas of Calcutta, the eminent exponent of the Lucknow Gharana, or line of Teachers. Sri Swapan combines depth of traditional compositions with spontaneous elaboration’s that create food for the soul and joy for the mind. Accompanying such renowned artists as Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, the late Nikhil Banerjee and the late Ustad Amir Khan, Swapan Chaudhuri has traveled throughout Europe, North America and Asia. He has made many television appearances and recordings with these artists, and has appeared in several International Music Festivals: Bath Perth, Tokyo, San Francisco, Kuala Lumpur, Stuttgard and Berlin. In addition to teaching at CalArts, he is Director of Percussion at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, California, where he trains many students from all over the world.
